OUR SEDATION METHODS

If you need a little extra help relaxing during your procedure, we can offer one of several dental sedation options. Read more below for all of our sedation methods we offer.

We’ll give you some special medication before the date of your appointment. You’ll ingest the medicine at a set time before your visit. During your procedure, you’ll feel very drowsy and relaxed, but you won’t fall asleep; you can still talk to us and respond to basic requests. Depending on the dosage of medicine you receive, you might not remember much of the procedure afterwards. Also, you will need someone else to drive you home once the treatment is complete.

For this type of sedation, you’ll breathe in a special gas delivered through a mask placed over your nose. The nitrous oxide – also known as laughing gas – will reduce your anxiety and will keep any discomfort you experience during your visit to a minimum. The effects of sedation will wear off soon after the mask is removed; you’ll recover quickly and will still be able to drive yourself back to work or to your house.

The sedative is administered directly to your blood stream through a needle; as such, it will take effect much more quickly than oral conscious sedation. Also, we’ll be able to adjust the level of sedation during the process in order to keep you as comfortable as possible. When you’re under the effect of IV sedation, time seems to pass very quickly, and you’ll find it very difficult to care about what’s going on around you.

Normal dental sedation helps you relax, but in some cases, it’ll be necessary for you to be almost unconscious or deeply asleep. Our dental office works with an anesthetic group to administer a general anesthetic when necessary. You won’t be easily awakened while under the effects of the medicine, meaning you won’t have to worry about any noises or sensations disturbing you during the procedure. We can give you specific instructions on preparing for the anesthetic as well as how to deal with the recovery process afterwards.
